One of the greatest lessons I've learned — both through my own recovery and through my work as a Certified Peer Specialist of Mental Health and a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist — is that people often know how to talk about mental health, but far fewer know how to stay present when someone's pain becomes visible.
It's easy to support people when they're thriving. It's much harder to sit beside someone whose depression has stolen their energy, whose trauma has made trust difficult, or whose grief has changed the way they move through the world.
I've lived both sides of that reality.
I've experienced what it feels like when people become uncomfortable with suffering they cannot fix. I've learned how loneliness can deepen when someone is already struggling. Those experiences have shaped not only who I am, but how I serve others.
what we believe at heart of care
Healing begins with presence.
At Heart of Care, we believe that healing doesn't begin with having all the answers. Healing begins with presence.
Trauma-informed care asks, "What happened to you?" instead of, "What's wrong with you?"
Peer support says, "You're not alone. I've walked through pain too, and hope is possible."
the foundation underneath
My Christian faith adds another foundation to that belief. Throughout Scripture, we see people walking alongside one another, carrying burdens together, comforting the brokenhearted, and refusing to abandon those who are suffering.
I believe that genuine care is more than a service — it is a commitment to remain present with compassion, dignity, and hope.
That is the heart of Heart of Care.
We don't promise perfect lives.
We promise that no one should have to walk through healing alone.
